Alonso: A great month for Ferrari

Sunday, July 31, 2011 | 0 comments

After a trying start to the Championship, which resulted in wholesale changes within the Scuderia, Ferrari and Alonso have come superior in recent races.

The Spaniard has bagged five podium finishes in six races and achieved his fourth consecutive top-three result in Hungary on Sunday afternoon.

Starting the race from fifth on the grid, Alonso made the most of the changing conditions to work his way up into third place, adding a further 15 points towards his title campaign.

"I think we are positive we can do a good second part of the Championship," he said. "The car has improved a lot, we are fighting for podiums, pole positions.

"July was a fantastic month. I am the driver who scored the most points in July, in three different conditions, at three dissimilar tracks. The team did a step onward and McLaren also did a good step forward so competition is quite fun.

"Unfortunately it was not very hot in July. We love high temperatures so expectantly August and September will be better for us."

As for Sunday's grand prix, the double World Champ will most likely wonder about what could have been had he not been bogged down at the start, losing places to both Mercedes GP drivers before coming up behind Mark Webber.

"I think in these type of conditions the race is very, very long - you need to be always paying attention with so many pitstops and so many weather conditions," he said.

"The start did not go as predicted, both Mercedes GP cars overtook us at the start, so I had to overtake Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher then with pit stops I was stuck at the back Webber.

"After that I was able to push with free air, and was quite quick, but for the first 20 laps we were after Mercedes and Mark."

Happy family: Jordan, bottom left, with Tia and Gracie, and proud grandparents Shem and Kelly

An unemployed man, 29, has become one of Britain's youngest grandparents after his daughter gave birth at 14.

Shem Davies and his former girlfriend Kelly John, 30, were overjoyed when their daughter Tia, who was born when her parents were 15, gave birth to little Gracie earlier this month. Tia's boyfriend, Jordan Williams, is 15.

Shem said: 'It is an absolute joy to see Gracie thriving. I'm incredibly proud of Tia. She'll be a brilliant mum. At first I wasn't overly pleased that she was pregnant but I soon got over than. Now it's all about being positive.

'I've got to know Jordan and he's shaping up to be a decent young man,' Shem told The People.

However, nurses at the maternity unit were left embarrassed after they thought the young grandfather was in fact the teenage father of Gracie.

Apparently when he entered the ward they thought the 29-year-old looked so fresh-faced they asked him to prove he was over the age of 16.

But the arrival of Gracie wasn't easy as Tia was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, seven weeks before her due date.

Worried doctors decided their best option would be to deliver the tot by Caesarean section.

The condition, which often leaves expectant mothers with high blood pressure and protein in their urine, could lead to life-threatening symptoms for both mother and baby.

Tia said the contrast between the carefree fun of the school playground and then the fear of death for her and the baby was something she would never forget.

Happily after a 25 minute operation Gracie was born but only weighed 2lb and was rushed to the special care unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, which is close to the family home.

Little Gracie is still being kept in an incubator but has managed to put on enough weight which means she will be allowed home in a few weeks.

A week after Gracie was born Tia celebrated her 15th birthday in the ward surrounded by friends and family.

Proud parents: Jordan and Tia with their newborn daughter Gracie who was born prematurely

The teenager, who has been dating Jordan for 18 months and wants to be a hairdresser, said she didn't plan on celebrating her birthday in hospital but added that her baby daughter was the best present she could ask for.

Once mother and daughter have been released from hospital they will be staying with grandmother Kelly so that Tia can finish school.

Grandad Shem, who has a young son of his own, said he is keen to get stuck in and help Tia and Jordan settle into life.

Jordan, who sat his final GCSE just weeks before Gracie arrived, said he understands responsibility. 'I'm captain of the school rugby team and that's like having 14 kids.'

Father and daughter: Shem with his daughter Tia and granddaughter Gracie

Despite her young age, mother Tia says that she would not be happy if newborn Gracie became pregnant at 14 but that she would do as her mum did, which is respect her choice to have a child.

She also paid tribute to her mother, who was 15 when she was born, saying that she could not have wished for a better parent and role model adding that they have a very close relationship.

Britain's high teenage pregnancy rate means that many more young people in this generation are set to become grandparents in their late twenties and early thirties.

The latest figures show in 2009 38,259 girls under 18 became pregnant, but nearly 50 per cent had a termination.

The UK still leads the way when it comes to young mothers, and our rate is five-times higher than in the Netherlands and twice that of France and Spain.

Simoncelli Dissapointment

Marco Simoncelli came to Laguna Seca with a nice change because in the last three series he was always able to reach the finish line to reap points. But when it appeared in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday (07.24.11) afternoon or Sunday (07.25.11) morning GMT, "Super Sic 'back to the old tradition of a fall and failed to finish the race. It became the fifth crash of the 10 series in its path along the 2011 season.

The fact is what makes Simoncelli disappointed. The spiky Italian again promises to reveal more cautious on the next series in Brno, Czech Republic.

"We've been working so well and managed to make improvements from one session to another session, but I realized from the beginning of the next race that made me even harder than in training. It's hard rounded the first corner on lap seven, which is an odd place to turn, and then again two laps later in turn eight.

Heavy night, Mike? Tindall is still in his morning suit the morning after as he emerges with his new wife Zara

By Pamela Owen

Get much sleep? Mike Tindall is seen arriving at The Palace of Holyroodhouse, wearing the same clothes he wore yesterday. Zara Phillips looked radiant in a pair of white jeans and a beige top

He's known for his love of enjoying a good party and it looks as though Mike Tindall had the time of his life after marrying Zara Phillips.

The England rugby star wore the same grey trousers and blue collared shirt he did the day before and looked as though he hadn't slept a wink.

Zara, who arrived separately from her husband, looked radiant in white jeans, flip flops and a beige sleeveless top.

Heavy night? Tindall picks his teeth as he stands next to a policeman outside Holyroodhouse

The couple have been determined to keep their wedding a private family occasion, but the crowds have been equally determined to share in their happiness during the first Royal wedding to be held in Scotland in 20 years.

Many frantically waved Union Jacks and the Scottish Saltire as the couple emerged from the ceremony shortly before 4pm yesterday, filling the air with cheers. Some, clearly touched by the splendour of the occasion, dabbed their eyes.

Zara dazzled the crowds in her full-length ivory silk gown with silk tulle detail, designed by the Queen’s favourite couturier Stewart Parvin.

The one-time Royal rebel, who proudly sported a tongue ring, looked every inch the traditional bride and this was her chance to be a princess for a day.

Her blonde hair was pulled back into an elegant chgnon and she wore a sparkling diamond tiara lent by her mother, she looked effortlessly beautiful.

Happy couple: Tindall in his suit when he married the Queen's granddaughter, Zara, in Edinburgh yesterday

Zara,30, was accompanied to the church by her proud father Captain Mark Phillips after earlier leaving in a Bentley from the Palace of Holyroodhouse several hundred yards down the Royal Mile.

The 45-minute ceremony was conducted by Canongate's resident Minister Reverend neil Gardner. A choir of 15 boys and girls from Zara's old Scottish boarding school sang during the ceremony.

The happy couple then left the Kirk in a Bentley for the 400-yard journey to Holyroodhouse for the reception.

A grand marquee was erected in a piazza of the palace and loud whoops and cheers could be heard from behind the palace walls.

Prince Harry also looked slightly worse for wear in a scruffy blue top and jeans and Princess Eugenie takes home a flower arrangement

Dinner had a Scottish theme and included lobster and crayfish cocktail, Scottish venison with dauphinois potatoes and chocolate fondant with strawberries.

The party was organised by Peregrine Armstrong Jones of party planners Bentley.

The Queen and Prince Philip left by helicopter and were taken to Balmoral Castle to begin their summer holiday.

Prince Charles and the Duchess or Cornwall are thought to have left before them and headed for the Caslte of Mey.

The newlyweds will not immediately head off on honeymoon as Zara will go to the Gatcombe International Horse Trials while her husband will return to training.

Zara's something borrowed... great-grandmother's tiara

By Daily Mail Reporter

Zara kept up the wedding tradition of having something borrowed by earing a spectacular diamond tiara that has been passed down through four generations of the Royal Family - and was last worn by her mother two months ago.

The bride's short silk veil was set off by the Meander tiara, once owned by Prince Philip's mother and loaned to Zara by Princess Anne, who wore it in May for a state banquet at Buckingham Palace to welcome President Obama and his wife Michele.

The tiara is based around a classical Greek 'key pattern' design and boasts a magnificent cut diamond at its centre, which is set off by a laurel wreath pattern picked out in diamonds with honeysuckle motifs on either side.

Royal gift: Princess Alice's tiara, worn by Princess Anne and her daughter Zara on her wedding day

The silver headpiece made its way into the Windsor family in 1947 when it was given as a wedding gift to the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, from her mother-in-law, Princess Alice of Batternberg.

Its Greek style was inspired by her marriage to Prince Andrew of Greece, the father of the present Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen never wore the tiara in public and it was next seen on Princess Anne, who was given the tiara by her mother in 1972.

The Princess Royal, now 61 and famous for recycling her outfits for high-profile occasions, wore the tiara during her engagement to her first husband, Zara's father Captain Mark Phillips, and has been pictured sporting it at least four times, notably in 2000 for an official portrait to mark her 50th birthday.

The disabled woman abandoned to be murdered for fun by a gang of savages who she thought were her friends

By Ross Slater

Gemma Hayter loved animals. She shared her chaotic flat in a tower block with a hamster and a noisy cockatiel called Jasmine and she would talk to every dog or cat that came her way.

But Gemma would talk to anybody who showed her the slightest attention – and it was her trusting friendliness that was ultimately to cost her her life.

Last week, three young people were convicted of Gemma’s brutal murder on a disused railway line, an act that followed hours of abuse in a flat.

Two others were found guilty of her manslaughter and all five were unanimously convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Everyone who came across Gemma, 27, in her home town of Rugby knew that she was different. She had a rare congenital disorder that caused her serious learning difficulties, and a distinctive physical appearance with a large head and crossed eyes.

In the pre ‘care in the community’ era, it is unlikely that she would have been allowed to live independently. Dawn Jennings at the post office a stone’s throw from the ten-storey block where she lived, cashed her benefits cheque on Tuesdays.

‘She was a lovely girl, totally innocent and child-like,’ she said.

‘She would not have hurt a fly and was a friend to all, but I did worry about how she coped. She wasn’t aware of time and there was no one to tell her when to go to bed and when to have a bath.’

Gemma’s neighbours in Biart Place, a triangle of tower blocks less than half a mile from central Rugby and the grand halls of the town’s famous public school, were certainly aware of her problems. Her flat smelt so bad that it engulfed the entire floor.

Those she confided in revealed that she had been moved to Biart Place in 2008 from an almost identical tower block on the other side of town after suffering bullying and sexual abuse.

Martin Bowes, 56, said: ‘I got to know her when I saw her walking past picking up cigarette butts off the street and asked her what she was doing. She said that she made them into roll-ups to smoke.

‘We got talking and I felt sorry for her. I ended up feeding her twice a week.

Watching her eat was pathetic. She would finish everything off and then ask for more. She’d mop it all up with bread and then use her thumb to completely clean the plate.’

Cruel: Jessica Lynas and Duncan Edwards were both found guilty of manslaughter following the death of Gemma Hayter

More disturbing to Martin than her table manners were her liaisons with men, drawn in by her internet profile where she described herself as ‘big, bold and beautiful’.

‘These fellas would drive here from all sorts of places and she would be driven off by them,’ he said.

‘It worried me sick. She was a big woman but she was also like a four-year-old child.’

And nowhere was her childishness more evident than in her attitude to money. ‘I had no change once so I gave her a £10 note and told her to go round to the shop and buy a pint of milk so I could sort her out,’ recalled Martin.

‘She came back 15 minutes later with the milk, a bag full of sweets and chocolate and no change at all. She said, “Oh, these are all nice.” ’

Her problems with budgeting meant that despite receiving benefits she often needed to borrow money to top up her electricity. Those she asked for help strongly suspected that she was being exploited by some of the ‘friends’ she made in Rugby.

Guilty: Chantelle Booth and Daniel Newstead, who were dating at the time of the murder, were both found guilty

Neighbour Adele Butterworth, 23, said: ‘I know there are other people besides those in the dock who should be feeling guilty for the way they treated Gemma.

‘She just wanted to be accepted so badly that she would put up with anything and often she didn’t realise people were just taking the mick.

‘Gemma told me about this boyfriend she had who was in prison. I don’t think he even existed but she would tell me that she’d had to give money to him so they could set up a home together.

These so-called friends tattooed the words, “Simon STD X” on her wrist. She said it was her boyfriend’s name. She had no idea that STD [sexually transmitted disease] was an insult.’

With such parasites leeching off her it is easy to see how money became a problem for Gemma and it formed the backdrop to the terrible events that led to her murder.

In the early evening of Sunday, August 8, last year, Gemma had been invited to the flat of her friend Chantelle Booth, then 21, and her partner Daniel Newstead, 20.

They were entertaining their neighbours Jessica Lynas, 18, and her boyfriend Joe Boyer, 17, as well as another teenager, Duncan Edwards, 18.

All of them had gone into Rugby town centre the night before and Gemma had annoyed them by telling bar staff that Chantelle was only 15. It was Gemma’s idea of a joke but she’d ‘ruined their night’ and Jessica had slapped her.

Shortly after Gemma arrived at the flat, a £5 note went missing and Jessica found it tucked behind the fridge.

Chantelle then brought up an incident from two years earlier when she believed Gemma had stolen £800 in backdated child benefit that was meant for Chantelle’s six-year-old son who was in care following her conviction for unlawful wounding.

The mood darkened. Bubbly blonde Chantelle became upset. This angered her chubby boyfriend Daniel, the father of her second child, and her other suitor, Duncan – with whom she had been swapping flirty texts.

Duncan began hitting Gemma with pillows.

Then Joe and Duncan both urinated into a beer can and forced Gemma to drink it.

Jessica, also a teenage mother with a child in care, jabbed Gemma in the face with a broom handle. Duncan waved a mop at her and Chantelle is said to have broken her nose with a head-butt.

Daniel, who claimed to the court that he had left the flat to get help for Gemma, returned and was so cross to see her blood in his bedroom that he punched her twice in the face.

Gemma is then said to have asked for Joe and Duncan to walk her home but in the event all five of them went.

The group was filmed leaving the centre of Rugby on CCTV. Gemma was wearing a cap pulled down low over her head. Instead of taking her home, the five led her down on to a disused railway line where a bin bag was put over her head before she was stripped naked, strangled, kicked mercilessly in the face and then stabbed in the neck.

Her clothes were then burnt by Duncan – who singed his hair.

The next day the group went with Duncan to get his hair cut before going to Coventry to visit pubs.

They were all arrested on the Tuesday after Daniel told a receptionist at the local social services that he had been present at the killing.

During the seven-week trial that ended on Thursday, the young defendants’ behaviour caused utter dismay to their expensively assembled legal teams.

They changed their stories several times but finally the two couples – Jessica and Joe, and Chantelle and Daniel – decided Duncan was solely responsible, while he blamed Daniel.

Their inconsistencies were easily exposed under cross-examination. At one point, when cornered, Chantelle swore at a barrister while Joe who, in a police interview had casually referred to Gemma as ‘that thing’, claimed to have been too intoxicated to remember anything.

In the dock, they simply larked about – laughing, passing one another notes and betraying not the slightest hint of concern.

At one point, the judge, the Right Honourable Lady Justice Rafferty, was forced to separate them like schoolchildren and warn them that they would be sent to the cells if they continued to misbehave.

It was only when the verdicts were read out that their demeanours changed.

The boys sat emotionless while Chantelle and Jessica screamed, cried, swore and hugged one another, their faces contorted and covered in black mascara.

All five were found guilty of the assault in the flat. Chantelle, Daniel and Joe were convicted of murder while Duncan and Jessica were found guilty of manslaughter.

In the public gallery sat a row of Gemma’s family including her mother Susan, who endured every day of the trial, and her two half-siblings.

It looked like a big support network but it seemingly failed to function once Gemma had reached adulthood and begun to live on her own and become the easiest target for the lowest of the low.

At different times of her life Gemma had contact with social services but she did not have a social worker. It is understood support had been offered but refused.

Warwickshire County Council described Gemma as a ‘vulnerable adult’ and after her death a Serious Case Review was commissioned by the Warwickshire Safeguarding Adults Board.

Wendy Fabbro, chair of that board and strategic director for Adult, Health and Community Services at the Council, said: ‘The review, which is being independently chaired and authored, is expected to conclude in September to take account of any additional information to emerge from the trial. A public summary of the findings and recommendations will be published.’

Lady Justice Rafferty called the case, ‘a tragedy for six young people’ – Gemma, and, ‘the five hapless, undirected, unsupported individuals in the dock’.

It was an acknowledgment that of the defendants, only one, Duncan Edwards, had a parent present at the end of the trial. The others, it seemed, had been abandoned.

But what of the many other Gemma Hayters living out there? How can they cope in a society that would appear, in part, to have lost its sense of right and wrong?

The charity Mencap estimates that nine out of every ten people with a learning disability are verbally harassed or exposed to violence because of their disability.

In Gemma’s case exposure to violence meant murder, committed by vacuous souls who saw her as a figure of fun to be laughed at, abused and killed for their entertainment.

CAST ADRIFT, THE LONELY VICTIMS OF MATE CRIMES

By Katharine Quarmby

I became aware of a disturbing pattern four years ago when I was news editor of the magazine Disability Now.

During the previous year – 2006 – eight disabled people were robbed, beaten and brutally killed in a period of just six months, yet each death was seen by police, prosecutors and the media as an isolated incident, a motiveless crime against a vulnerable ¬victim who couldn’t fight back.

I began to investigate such crimes and discovered that the incidents weren’t isolated and the crimes weren’t motiveless – they were committed out of hatred, rather than because the victims were vulnerable.

Fiona Pilkington (left) killed herself and her daughter Francecca Hardwick (right) after years of abuse from bullies

There are so many cases: Fiona Pilkington, who killed herself and her disabled daughter Francecca after suffering years of verbal and physical abuse from youths; Christine Lakinski, who collapsed near her own front door but was covered in shaving foam and urinated upon as she lay dying; Brent Martin, who was punched and kicked to death by a gang of youths ‘for sport’, in the words of a prosecutor.

My research, which eventually led to a book, Scapegoat: Why We Are Failing Disabled People, suggests that, although this is a problem with ancient roots, failures in the implementation of modern ‘community care’ policy are also to blame.

The lack of money to fund disabled people’s resettlement was one problem; another was the failure to anticipate the bitter backlash that would ensue. For disabled people had been maliciously stereotyped for at least 2,000 years as either scapegoats, sinners or freaks.

By Victorian times, disabled people were so shunned that many, particularly those with mental health conditions and learning difficulties, were imprisoned in asylums or long-stay hospitals. By the mid-Fifties, the number of disabled people who had been institutionalised had reached a peak of 150,000.

These institutions were, almost without exception, awful places where people with learning difficulties were treated with profound inhumanity.

Then a number of well-publicised scandals in the Sixties brought pressure to bear on the Government to start closing the institutions down.

In 1971, the White Paper, Better Services For The Mentally Handicapped, kick-started the community care initiative, pushing for at least half of those in hospitals to be living in the community by 1990. A similar White Paper, Better Services For The Mentally Ill, was published in 1975 by the Labour Government.

Community care was the right thing to do. But the way in which it was carried out failed the very people it was supposed to help.

Between 1955 and 1975, about 80,000 people left the asylums. But their need for medication, accommodation and support was not met. Community care was done on the cheap.

As early as 1985, a Social Services Select Committee report warned that hospital closures had outrun provision in the community. Even worse, a small number of killings by people with mental health problems sparked a fearful and angry reaction by the general public.

Jean Collins, a campaigner from the charity Values into Action, observed that the closures were characterised by ‘chaos and confusion’.

No one had prepared people with learning difficulties for life outside institutions. They were pauperised too, she said, adding: ‘Many were abandoned in a hostile, fearful society.’

Most were resettled in houses that nobody else wanted, on estates where nobody wanted to live. Many became socially isolated. And it wasn’t long before they were targeted.

Many, particularly people with learning difficulties, were desperate for friendship and were befriended by people who groomed them, robbed them, attacked them and killed them – so-called ‘mate crimes’, a recognised subset of hate crime.

Prejudice against disabled people had only grown stronger because so many had been shut away for centuries. Disability hate crime should have been a tragedy foretold.

But it wasn’t. Such crimes will carry on until we face our own prejudices about disability – and, as a society, start to change.

Nissan Patrol

Reliable, unbreakable, affordable. The Nissan Patrol is a name synonymous with ruggedness, a legendary off-roader capable of going anywhere, anytime. Meticulously honed for over five decades, the Patrol is Nissan's flagship large SUV model and enjoys a rich heritage particularly in the Middle East that dates back to the 1950's. This off-road trendsetter was one of the first dedicated four-wheel-drive vehicles in the climatically demanding Middle East region, and boasts the notable distinction of also being the first vehicle to successfully cross the grueling Simpson Desert in Australia back in 1962.

Under the banner of "The Hero Comes Home" the Nissan Patrol is back as an all-new seventh generation model, building on its impressive history, but at the same time, incorporating a new platform, a radical new design direction, significantly enhanced interior comfort and luxury, powerful new V8 engines, a 7-speed automatic transmission and a new 4WD system.
"We paid special attention to the needs of current Nissan Patrol owners, and their passengers, and so focused on creating first-class levels of comfort for the whole family. Heightened luxury, a roomier cabin and a quieter ride combine to achieve this goal, while maintaining Nissan Patrol's superior off-road heritage" stresses Hiroyuki Fushiki, project head and Segment Chief Product Specialist.
Tested to the limit
Wanting to build the best possible Nissan Patrol, engineers first tuned and tested 200 prototypes for dynamic evaluation at the company's Motegi, Oppama and Tochigi proving grounds before sending them to the Middle East where they were exposed to every imaginable challenge; desert, rocky surfaces, highways and inner-city traffic. "By the time we came around to adding the new body and interior, we had virtually completed our reliability and durability testing and perfected all of the new technologies," says chief vehicle engineer, Takashi Fukui.
After extensive market research, especially in the Middle East, the design team concluded that for the Nissan Patrol to beat its main competitors, it needed not only a brand new design direction but class-leading engine performance, greater luxury and comfort and a smart mix of new technologies that enhanced the total driving experience. Product design director, Taiji Toyota, tells us that the all-new exterior design is like a breath of fresh air. "Not as edgy and hardcore as its predecessor, the softer new surfaces are beautiful and add a sense of modernity to the design equation, while still maintaining a ruggedness and commanding road presence" he said.
According to the design director, one design element that expresses 'Patrol' and had to feature strongly was the angled-strut motif front grille. It was meticulously proportioned to deliver a sense of continuity with past models but give a touch of newness while enhancing the car's status level.
Focus on roomier, more luxurious cabin
Featuring generous amounts of leather, polished aluminium and wood grain paneling, the Nissan Patrol's interior too has been significantly upgraded. Given that most customers only go off-road no more than 15% of the time, designers wanted to create a better, higher quality interior for the whole family.
In keeping with the Nissan Patrol's mission to deliver more comfort and more room, the new Patrol delivers seat dimensions that outclass all competition. Boasting wider, higher and deeper front seats, the Nissan Patrol offers over 100mm more legroom for second row passengers, and a roomier third row of seats as well. Employing double the lateral rigidity over the outgoing model, the new Nissan Patrol sits on a revised platform that now offers a more robust construction with a low vibration body.
All-new V8 engine leads array of segment-beating hardware
The new Nissan Patrol is now the most powerful vehicle in its class. And the key technology achieving this jump in performance over the predecessor's 4.8 litre power plant is the newly developed 'VK56VD' 5.6-litre V8 engine with VVEL (variable valve event and lift) and DIG (direct injection gasoline) technologies that generate 400hp and 550Nm of torque on the top specification version of this new engine.
Every component has been redesigned for maximum performance and smooth response, while a new 7-speed automatic transmission with a wider range of gear ratios than its predecessor, gives the off-roader the ability to deliver power faster.
Comprehensively upgraded 4WD system sets new standard
In a world-first for Nissan, the new Patrol employs a Hydraulic Body Motion Control System (HBMC), which keeps the car flatter with less body roll during lane-changing and cornering, while delivering a comfortable ride in city driving and superb stability on rugged and sandy tracks. Another crucial part of handling equation comes from the new suspension system, which now employs 4-wheel independent suspension, upgraded from the previous rigid axle setup. Nissan has completely redesigned the vehicle's suspension from the bushes to the links. The combination of HBMC and the new suspension system with its longer suspension stroke delivers significantly improved handling and stability on both on- and off-road terrain.
The Nissan Patrol also employs a newly developed ALL MODE 4x4 system incorporating a variable 4x4 mode package. It allows the driver to quickly switch between four drive modes: sand, on-road, snow and rock, with the flick of a switch. In sand mode, owners are able to drive safely, quickly and skillfully in sand and dirt, just like professional rally drivers.
In addition, the Nissan Patrol also offers a new Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control which can also be selected easily with the touch of a button. With Hill Start Assist, if a driver stops on a slope and steps off the brake pedal, the system keeps the vehicle stationary - with no roll back. Hill Descent Control uses the brakes to maintain a constant downhill speed of 7km/h in 4H mode and 4km/h in 4L mode.
The new model employs a revised Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) with tyre inflation indicator which beeps the horn softly to inform drivers that a suitable tyre pressure has been reached.
A revised, more effective brake system also provides the best braking performance in its class thanks to its new hydraulic brake booster and a 4-piston opposed front caliper setup with larger 358mm front discs.
More world-firsts
Nissan designers paid special attention to the second row seat passengers by not only significantly expanding legroom, but by also fitting a new multi-screen DVD entertainment system, a first form Nissan. It boasts two rear-facing TVs; one 7-inch monitor embedded into each front seat headrest.
Fitted with six airbags for top grade, the Nissan Patrol also comes with a totally revised climate control system boasting another world-first - the curtain vent. Curtain vent has several small but highly effective vents mounted in the ceiling above each side window to blow a strong current of cool air down forming a curtain of air that acts as a barrier to heat penetrating the cabin.
Yet another impressive Nissan Patrol feature is the cool box mounted in the centre console between the front seats. Incorporating a unique double hinge design, the lid of the cool box can be opened easily from either the front or second row of seats to access the six 600ml drink bottles inside.
And lastly...
With its fresh new styling, superior packaging, powerful but economical V8 engine, clever off-road technologies and higher levels of luxury and comfort, the all-new Nissan Patrol is now a true segment leader.

Nissan LEAF

It would be easy to paint Nissan as late to the burgeoning U.S. green party, as the company essentially only counts the Altima Hybrid to sell among its alt-fuel offerings – and that sedan utilizes technology borrowed from Toyota, and it's only sold in a few states in small volumes. While that may be the case, Nissan says their near-term prospects are really quite different. While the company has admittedly been cautious in marketing alt-fuel vehicles in North America, they have been hard at work developing electric vehicles – as well as the advanced lithium-ion batteries to support them – since 1992. What's more, officials say they are now singularly well-placed to leapfrog "transitional" powertrain solutions like gas-electric hybrids in favor of genuine zero-emissions vehicles, and they are promising that their first pure-electric car will reach U.S. shores late next year.

That car, the Nissan Leaf shown here, is the reason we find ourselves in the company's brand-new Yokohama headquarters today. Designed as a four-to-five seat, front-drive C-segment hatchback, Nissan says the Leaf is not just for use as a specialty urban runabout, but rather, it was designed as an everyday vehicle – a "real car" whose 160-kilometer+ (100 mile) range meets the needs of 70% of the world's motorists. In the case of U.S. consumers, Nissan says that fully 80% of drivers travel less than 100km per day (62 miles), making the Leaf a solid fit for America's motoring majority, even taking into account power-sapping external factors like hilly terrain, accessory draw, and extreme temperatures.

We were afforded an advance look at the Leaf ahead of the car's unveiling today, and while it was a hands-off affair, we did have the chance to formulate some in-the-metal first impressions and take a deep dive into the car's technology. Click through to the jump to learn all about it.

In between the Focus going on sale in the U.S. as a 2000 model and Mulally  taking over, product development in Europe and North America took off in different directions. Hence, Europe was rewarded with a heavily reworked second-generation Focus in 2004. The next year, North America got a warmed-over version of the first-gen Focus sedan and hatchback.
                                              2012 ford focus rs
Starting in early 2011, the Focus in both North America and Europe will be the same vehicle. This is to be applauded because there was a big gap between the European Focus and the machine sold here. The European car improved on the basic goodness of the original, with better interior quality and driving dynamics. The U.S. car essentially stayed put: The original Focus was good enough to be a C/D 10Best winner, but the competition moved on, leaving the current version dead last in a recent small-car comparo.
                                           2012 ford focus rs
The 2012 Focus certainly looks terrific, especially in five-door form. The engineers and designers felt able to make the Focus sportier (by lowering its seating position and overall height) due to the upcoming C-Max—a tall-roof, five- or seven-seat derivative off this platform—that fulfills the family-car mission. Compared with the current U.S. Focus, the new car is 0.5 inch lower (at 58.1 inches tall) and 3.0 inches longer (178.0 inches overall), and it has a 1.3-inch-longer wheelbase (104.2 inches). The 2012 model’s dimensions are close to the current Euro car’s, save for a wider track and lower stance.
                                             2012 ford focus rs
A new body in white employs high-strength steel for 55 percent of the structure, the highest of any U.S. Ford. Torsional rigidity is up by 25 percent over that of the current Focus. Under the skin, the layout of the strut front and multilink rear suspension stands pat, but many pieces are revised. According to Gunnar Herrmann, the vehicle line director for global C-segment: “The carry-over on the platform is effectively only seven percent. We have changed almost everything.”
                                           2012 ford focus rs
At launch, the Focus will get a new 2.0-liter, direct-injection four-cylinder that has variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing. Ford says the engine will put out 155 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Later on, expect a sportier engine. Jim Hughes, the chief nameplate engineer for the Focus in North America, adds, “We’ll eventually get an EcoBoost [turbocharged DI] engine in the Focus.” We’re thinking a 1.6-liter making more than 200 horsepower in a sporty ST model.
                                           2012 ford focus rs
The Focus will go on sale with two available transmissions: a base six-speed manual and a very fancy six-speed dual-clutch gearbox co-developed with Getrag. Derrick Kuzak, the global product-development chief, says: “There will be no conventional automatic on this car.” Electric power steering is a new feature, along with “torque vectoring,” which, similar to the systems of many other automakers, uses the anti-lock brakes to approximate a limited-slip differential.
                                             2012 ford focus rs
The interior looks like a winner, but there’s a caveat: The styling mockup we examined had hard surfaces, even if Ford assures us everything will be soft-touch in the production version. The mockup had cool piano-black and aluminum finishes and a stitched dashboard. This upscale trim is called “Titanium” in Europe, and it’s hard to imagine that the base U.S. model, which should still retail around the current car’s $16,690 price, will look as stylish.

2011 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport L’Or Blanc

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport L’Or Blanc is the world’s first automobile to be equipped with porcelain, and the development team invested a lot of effort to guarantee that each item is capable of performing in every driving situation in the most powerful car on the market. Before their application to the car, the porcelain elements were extensively examined in regard to automotive safety and quality to optimally protect the passengers in case of an accident.
As part of the exterior design, porcelain is used for the inlays of the centre wheel badges, the fuel filler cap and the oil filler cap as well as the signature “EB” badge at the rear. Their shiny white surface blends in with the brilliant bright finish of the paint suggesting that the car would be coated with a thin layer of porcelain, too.
Besides the signed porcelain inlays on the sides of the centre console, an intarsia made of finest porcelain is fixed to the rear panel between the seats. Similar to the exterior porcelain elements this item carries the relief of the famous elephant in an upright standing position that has been created by sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti. His brother Ettore had used the original draft to cast the radiator mascot for the Bugatti Royale. This elephant is a synonym for the brand still today. Embedded in the top of the centre console, there is a fine porcelain dish with edges finished in an exclusive diamond polishing Рa technique that has been applied by the K̦nigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin for the very first time.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport L’Or Blanc presented in Berlin, is a one-of-a-kind creation. Nevertheless, the partnership is supposed to be continued, and Bugatti’s designers received a lot of inspiration from porcelain painting offering a variety of new opportunities for the design. The price of the
Bugatti L’Or Blanc is 1.65 m EUR.
