Andrea Iannone took victory from pole position in the Moto2 race as he closed the gap on second-placed Julián Simón in the standings. And when the main event arrived it was Casey Stoner who won his first MotoGP race of the year, taking what turned out to be a comfortable victory with Pedrosa and Stoner’s Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden completing the podium. Despite the remote setting there were also just over 70,000 fans present on race day to soak up the atmosphere, with the Paddock Girls assisting the action in keeping them entertained. When the race action got underway it was Pol Espargaró, who came out on top in the 125 event, taking his third win of the season as Marc Márquez crashed out, thus reopening the title chase once more. Stoner was once more top in FP3, laying the foundations for what was to be his second pole position of the season as he also dominated qualifying, setting the only sub-1’49” lap of the weekend. Ever present in the minds of all inside the paddock a minute’s silence was held in memory of Shoya Tomizawa prior to the 125cc race, as everybody paid tribute to the Japanese rider who passed away two weeks previously.A return to the three free practice format saw the opening round of sessions take place on the Friday morning, with the first day affected by rain. Dani Pedrosa was fastest in the first MotoGP run as he capitalised on the dry conditions, and in the wet afternoon session Casey Stoner took over at the top of the timesheet.
