Ben Spies was surprised with the performance of the Yamaha M1 motorcycle 1.000cc that will be used in the 2012 season. In his debut with the new motor in the official test at Brno, Czech Republic, on Monday (8/15/2011), Spies appear quite promising and is ranked third, behind Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda), and teammate, Jorge Lorenzo. He was just 0.138 seconds adrift of Stoner.
On the occasion, Spies successfully completed 15 laps. Apparently, the records can be time 0.878 seconds faster than his best lap with a 800cc engine, which also tried the same occasion.
"Upgrade from 800cc we tried on gain positive result this morning. Hopefully in the future could be better," said Spies, a former world champion superbike with engine 1.000cc this, regarding an update on the engine and electrical system.
"With motor 1.000cc, it seems we are successful on the first day. We did not make many changes because it just ate a lot of laps to get as much data as possible."
"We make small changes to see how the effects of differences in comparison with a 800cc motor. Apparently there are many improvements made, and became a surprise because it can be faster than 800cc."
